This is the 2nd Year that I have taken my 4th grade Accelerated class to teach the Pre-K class at Bright Beginnings in a Buddy Outreach program. The intention is to give the Pre-K students a positive experience with school-aged kids prior to entering Kindergarten in the fall, while also encouraging my 4th graders to give back to others by sharing their skills with younger students and teaching them how to interact with them in a positive way. Each Pre-K student is paired with 2 or 3 of my 4th graders.
The 4th graders prepare activity bags for their assigned buddy which includes all materials and books for their child. The students rotate through 4 stations of activities. They practice letter recognition by playing Alphabet Bingo. They work on counting on with Addition Bump-It. They listen to a story being read by their 4th grade buddies, and they make a craft. All materials are made for the Pre-K students to take home and continue practicing their skills over the summer months so they are armed for kindergarten in the fall.
Following the learning stations, the classes share a picnic lunch together. It's a win-win for all students involved in the program.
